Bangkito (Hand-carved Stool)

2021. European walnut.

This stool was a case study and experiment into carving techniques. We were inspired the by the work of Filipino woodworkers and their affinity for texture that encourages touch; it was important for us to create a piece that looked tactile and invited the viewer to touch it. The texture on the legs was carved by hand with gouge chisels and gives the wood a terrain-like pattern. The walnut we chose was a nod to the earthy colours of local Filipino woods such as kamagong and mahogany whilst the ash dowel details add a touch of modern contrast. This piece is versatile and can be used as a stool, footstool or side table.

The top is joined to the legs with dowels and the legs are mortice and tenoned.

Bangkito is tagalog for little bench or footstool.
