Naka-mishmash Coffee Table

2022. Pippy oak, walnut and ash.

Inspired by George Nakashima, this coffee table is a mish mash of different reclaimed timbers. The top is a slab of English pippy oak - a local hardwood with beautiful striations and grain variations. The multitude of cracks in the top had to be supported with strategically placed butterfly joints. These joints serve a structural purpose, but equally add to the wabi sabi aesthetic that we strove for with this piece. The strong angles and architectural shapes of the base contrast with the organic nature of the top - this was what Nakashima eventually became known for.

The legs are joined to the upper support beam by a half lap. The perpendicular struts supporting the top are also half lapped into the main support beam and the ash dowel passes fully through each leg.
