Joy Bench
2023. FSC White Oak.
This outdoor bench was commissioned as a memorial piece for the client’s father. The two seat slabs are cut with an organic shaped channel down the centre as a reference to the river by which this bench will stand. Built to withstand the elements, the bench has numerous traditional joinery techniques used throughout its construction. The main body of the bench is mortice and tenoned while the back rests are dowelled. We chose butterfly joints to join these pieces both for their durability and their symbolic significance to a preferred clothing item worn by the memorialised.
Our client wanted the bench to be a respite along the river for pedestrians but also those fishing and so we included notches in the bench seat top for resting a rod.
