Kahon (Jewellery Box)

2021. Walnut, ash, padauk, cherry, wenge, olive.

This keepsake box is a project using every small piece of reclaimed wood we had left in our workshop. Over the course of projects we manage to accumulate a lot of small off cuts that are too large to throw away but too awkward a size to incorporate into our larger pieces. We rarely get to work with exotic woods such as padauk and wenge because of how unsustainable it is to purchase them in the UK, which is why finding them from reclaimed sources is so exciting. The shape of this keepsake box is quite simple so as to let all the various woods shine. The hint of a live edge shape is visible in the gap of the door which also acts as a handle.

This box has 6 small drawers showcasing 6 different hardwoods on each front. It also features a hidden pull out tray on the roof of the drawer on the right side. The hinges for this box are hand made from walnut and brass. The body of the box is mitred and the central divider is grooved in place. We once again added an element of wabi sabi to this piece by incorporating ‘stitching’ over the knots of the walnut to prevent further cracking and enhance the beauty of knots rather than hide them.
