Mababa (Low Table)
2023. English Elm, Walnut and Ash.
This low table was commissioned as a surface to be placed near a home’s entrance. The top of the piece is made from a single slab of waney edge elm and has large cracks and fissures held together with butterfly joints and stitches. These serve to prevent the widening of the cracks but also add asymmetry and visual interest to the piece.
The height of the table allows storage of slippers or shoes underneath but it can also be used as a work surface for those who enjoy sitting on the floor in their home. Tables like this are more common in Asian households as a surface for casual family meals.
